We could take our straight talk to bloggers show on the road…oh, wait…we already do ;) You’re making me damn proud-and the moment you lose that authentic voice I beat you ;)

…my upset pick Belmont just lost, I have to go cry now.

  3. Michael Nally Says:

Awesome. I’m trying to get something new off of the ground as we speak and those three minutes of advice you just gave me have not only given me the knowledge, but the confidence to push on and make it happen! Thanks Gary.

  4. Russ Says:

Gary, thank you so much. You are truly an inspiration in my life. I can feel the sincerity and passion in your voice and it gives me goosebumps. Keep up the great work and I hope I have the pleasure to meet you someday.

  5. Alex Says:

You know what I love about this? With all the traffic on WLTV you could EASILY put this kind of stuff in a book and sell tons. Instead you’re giving it away - 80/20 at work. I love that. It’s definitely something I want to take to my site. High-five Gary. High-five.

  6. Paisano Says:

BooYA! Great job paisan’. No one can argue with your logic nor your success! You eat your own dog food (what wine goes with Alpo by the way?) and we love that about you. I hope you don’t forget us little people once you go hollywood full time! Please remember the tweetple who helped you climb that mountain. We know you will. ;)

Soon it’ll be time for team green to get very mean!

  7. Rayan Says:

Gary, everything you say here is 100% true. If people just focused on giving instead of putting a price on everything, they’d be surprised how much the universe gives back. I know I was.

  8. Mike P Says:

I enjoyed hearing about your “Golden Rule”. You obviously roll from the heart and are very passionate about what you do. It’s nice to see when there are a lot of people in today’s world who worry more about “Me First”.

    Thanks Gary

  9. Kevin Gianni Says:

Completely different take on the 80/20 rule. Love it. I’m a student of all the internet marketing techniques, but this resonates stronger with me. Just give it up and the rest will follow…

    Hey Gary,

Excellent post. I wholeheartedly agree. I think you getting out there and doing these video blogs is one of the reasons I will finally get the courage to do videoblogging as well. Certain personalities work really well with videoblogging. Yours is definitely one of them. No wonder you are so popular! :)

I wrote a post recently called “How I Tripled My Blog’s Traffic In Two Months.” I think we have similar opinions, though I expanded on your points a bit by explaining a few ways I drove traffic to my blog. Here is the post — I’d love your opinion if you have a few minutes:

I have subscribed to your blog and will continue to read it. Thanks again for the great post!

  15. BGreen Says:

absolutely believe you are hitting the mark with the 80/20, now how to get other sectors to start getting on board with this… relationships are the key, and can be strong and lift everyone up when they’re good, yet apathy is a killer! Wish we could bottle YOU and send special delivery to wake up those uninformed about how great things could be! Thanks, Gary!!!

  16. Jim Turner Says:

In relationships give 90 and take 10. I think that was Dale Evans and Roy Rogers said was the key to the success of their long lasting marriage.

  20. Ryan Parsley Says:

    Gary,
Absolutely stellar. What I loved most about this post was how it shattered my preconceived notion of what you would be talking about with 80/20.

I encountered an 80/20 rule not nearly as awesome (and I don’t mean 80’s ninja turtles awesome, I mean biblically awesome). It was, that the final 20% perceived work effort can be more challenging than the first 80, so you may as well launch prematurely and save the rest for version 2.

But then, to read your post about over-delivering on every occasion, [sighs]… Exactly what I need to hear. I feel like the status is getting ever more quo. It is refreshing to hear ya preach (even when to the choir).

    Don’t go changin’

  21. Ian Kath Says:

Totally agree the 80/20 rule is how I attempt to do all in my life. Work, relationships, play the lot. The 80/20 rule is what is required to live a balanced and content life. It avoids sloth and prevents obsessiveness. Encourages independence without dependence. It enables joy without denying sadness.

It’s just keeping it all in perspective and balanced. Funny though is that it’s 80/20 not 50/50 but that’s what you end up with. :-)

  22. ryptide Says:

Totally with you, GV. I feel like you’re giving ME 80%(at least), so tell me, what can I do for you?

  31. Andrea Baker Says:

This was an inspiring pick me up, after the long and trying week I have had. I’m the gal who was dealing with the being a tyrant in her community (saw/asked you at FOWA). Anyhoo, the community I was considering myself as a community manager of is going through a major shift change and it seems that my views as a CM were going down one path and another CM is going down a completely different path. We both have our own blogs, but we occasionally posted to a “team” community managers blog when we wanted to voice it as a consensus, or so I thought.

I have a lot of people who tell me I am their mentor and inspiration and that makes it all worth it. But this week, I resigned from the semantic name of community manager and said I no longer manage this space, I am an user advocate and a developer liaison. I removed myself from the blog because I feel that my street cred and my brand don’t need to be attached to something I no longer believe in. I believe in the people and that blog was not speaking to that when the other CM wrote on it using the term “WE”.

I do believe my blog is good enough to stand on its own as a brand. So I am going to continue advocacy from that platform. Since (semi-meeting) you, I feel like I am on a better path to just speaking about what I believe in for the users and what I can do for them. Its never been about me and your words tonight make me feel so much better.

  33. Lee Adkins Says:

Great video, Gary. You, more than a shitton of other people, truly understand what makes business greatness, because you realize that is isn’t always just the money side of the business that is important at any given time, but the real relationships you can build with the people you engage (which will *always* payoff more in the future).
I like watching these videos. You are one hell of a motivator.

    Oh, and @verygreenteam FTW

  34. AKDocmike Says:

Gary V…you’re spot on. I think we all need to move beyond the idea that we can get before we give. Love the way you give and educate others to give without expectations. You’re absolutely right about building relationships especially with the web, because it can be very impersonal. Keep up the work and spread the enthusiasm. Much love!

Excellent video, definitely something to be taken to heart with the medium we have today. So long have we been stuck in situations where we can’t respond, whether it be watching television or sitting in a classroom and now we have that opportunity to give back to the communities that we have long participated idly in. And I agree with ryptide, this is really the first video that I have seen featuring you (saw you guesting on Diggnation long time ago) and I’m very pumped to see what you have been up to and how you have accomplished so much.

  42. Crawford Says:

    Yes. Great post.
Along the same lines, think about your biz decisions screened through the four absolutes: Honesty. Unselfishness. Love. Purity. With every ask action and decision, ask yourself, “Is it?”
    Carry on!

  43. Smith MBA Says:

    Gary,

This turned B-School 80/20 on its head. 80/20 B-School version also known as the power rule is the first 80% of the work gets done with 20% of the effort. The gist being, get the big ideas down, set up an outline and plan but don’t worry too much about every detail.

The other version of the 80/20 rule is that you can build a business to a certain point before it grows to be too large. 80% of sales and profits are made by 20% of the businesses out there.

I think your version is a much better philosophy than these rules especially if you are in a business of satisfying client demands, personal demands, etc. It is unnatural to put 80% of the effort into a partnership, marriage, business relationship, friendship or whatever. More often people put in 30% or 40% of the effort and expect the other side to pick up the slack which means there is a weak relationship. Taking personal responsibility to be the torch bearer in any relationship is a novel concept which I think will make each relationship better on the whole.

  44. Alan / Falcon Says:

Nice video, Calacanis liked it too.

  46. steve garfield Says:

    Hi Gary,

Yes. I get it. I live it.

Funny how hard it is to find those that will honestly give you even 20%, but when you do find them, you hold on to them like gold.

Actually hold on to the relationship, so you can share it with others.

I’ve got a list of companies that I recommend without hesitation because I know how they will treat their customers. You mentioned a few.

When I watch videos, I watch people. When I deal with companies, I deal with people.

  49. Mike L Says:

You hit the nail on the head. The ultimate foundation in any business is drive and passion. A good product can only sell itself when there’s that equal amount of give and take. Equal being 80/20. Great post, Gary!

  55. Tim Letscher Says:

Love the passion, Gary. 80/20, crazy to think the source, Pareto was born in the 1800’s and most of the world STILL doesn’t follow this. Admittedly, it takes effort; maybe that’s why it doesn’t spread. And that Kathy Sierra session at SXSW was one of the best of the weekend, bar none.

Word. A rising tide lifts all boats. In business, you can’t worry about today, you gotta worry about 10 years down the road, and people will FLOCK to work with givers and straight shooters. Not because they are all that rad intrinsically, but because shockingly there are so few of them.

Just as an FYI - the 80 / 20 rule is also called the Pareto Principle and actually says that 80% of effects come from 20% of the causes…

Like 80% of your sales come from 20% of your clients

It was not mean to work in reverse (e.g. 80% of the causes, or as you put it work then net 20% of the effects) - that would be counterintuitive…

  80. Jon Says:

I love the 80/20 rule. You are so on target with it. It is amazing how it’s the little things that make the biggest difference. This years resolution was to spend more time with the family. My kids grow up too fast and I HAVE to make the time during my life now.

Thank you for all you do.

  81. Tom Says:

Not to be pedantic about it, but the 80/20 rule states that 20% of effort results in 80% of output. It is not about adding 80 + 20 = 100. Why? Because the 20% is on one ledger, the 80% is on another.

For example, if I look at five things I have to do today, only one of those will be vital. If I concentrate on that one thing, I get back 4x from all the other four activities combined.

Now, the rest of what you had to say I agree with completely, and I am working hard to make it all work in my life and business.

(Incidentally, that’s the most important part, but everyone who knows me knows I’m a pain in the *ss.) :)
