I want to try to get the WHOLE INTERNET COmmunity behind this mission I have to make sure that tomorrow people write and talk abd blog and twitter and just flat out SING about people that are AWESOME and GOOD. It is time that we take control of the fact that WE are the media and pump out a day tomorrow that will make NOISE across this WORLD! Please take the time tonight to gather your thoughts as you come up with ideas on how to spread the word about AWESOME people! I am looking for blog posts, twitters, powncers, facebooking, digging, flickring, stumpling on all things that are good about PEOPLE!

I love this idea. All too often the internets are riddled with negativity or people just getting wrapped up in discussions that, at the end of the day, really just don’t matter that much. If we can have a day where we celebrate the things and the people that really matter and inspire us, that will certainly go a long way. But ya know what, let’s keep it going too. So make 4/3/08 the start and just don’t stop!
April 2nd, 2008 at 8:18 pm
Gary, you continue to amaze me. I will do it

@garyvee - YOU are an awesome and good person!
April 2nd, 2008 at 8:26 pm
Your observation that people are awesome and good lies at the core of the solution to the problems in the world today. It’s nice to see someone get so excited about it. The entire system of governance all over the planet is based on FORCING people to help each other, and its effect is the opposite of its alleged intent.
I say alleged because I have become increasing aware of just how easy it is for power to corrupt. I don’t think social programs’ ostensible goals are the intent of those who expect governments to fund them. So yeah, people are awesome and good, but there’s a huge parasite squashing their goodness and using the perception that we all need to be protected from each other to keep it down. Check out mises.org if you have time.
April 2nd, 2008 at 8:26 pm
This is awesome and amazing. The idea is fantastic and I can assure you that I will be implementing it for all the good people that I know personally and those I don’t know that personally.

Gary - I don’t want to sound like Cassandra - but I hope you mean ‘good people in general’ and not ‘good people and here’s a list’…
In my experience, trying to point out ‘those who are good’ often means forgetting others who are, and making them feel excluded and unvalued.
I would never participate in something that had the potential for me to hurt someone by leaving someone else out who also deserved recognition - but relied upon my memory.
The oscar speech for me is “Thank you to everyone - my friends, my family, and all those who made this possible” - but there would never be a list, lest I forget someone who would be forever hurt by their exclusion.

I fervently believe that we, as the first generation of new media passionistas have a responsibility to eschew the gossip loving, bully loving, negative loving old media monopoly and present the world with a more realistic, positive alternative…that courage, respect and integrity are to be admired, strived for and celebrated. The very accessibility and democratization of media in the past few years is a powerful metaphor for the world that can be….

Gary, you don’t know me yet, but I am sure our paths will cross soon. I believe our society is at a crossroads. Social media either helps us see the path which leads us to greater participation and collaboration or it is used as just another way to sell stuff, manipulate people, and keep on, keeping on.
Here’s short but deep piece that describes why I believe social media is a movement not a marketplace.

Bejeezus, it should be talk about good peeps day everyday, and for many it is. But I’m down. And I hope people realize that when something is done truly for good and from the heart then there can only be a positive outlook. I think the whole point of this is to get us to start thinking about how ridiculous it is to even have such a day. Do I make sense? I mean, we’ll have this day and everyone will feel good but, per a previous comment, then we’ll think about the guy or girl that we didn’t mention. SO! The solution then is to phone them up, text them, write them an email, go down to their house, etc. and say, “I love ya, man!” Then we’ll chuckle to ourselves that it took a “national day/movement” to get us to remember to say how much we care about the people around us.
So, today, tomorrow, and on the 3rd and for many many days after that let us continue to shine in our own unique way and let people know how much we appreciate them all.

Yes it’s an awesome idea and probably something that social media should focus on more. I’m thrilled that you took up something with such positive ability. It’s true that it’s easy to post about companies and websites much more so than good people. And of course the mainstream media will always have to work to really focus on good stories. Which is why the last 2.5 minutes of the national news is always a feel good story. Such as the NBC Nightly News’ segments on Making A Difference.
That being said, when one is filled with such a wonderful inspirational opinion and also has the ability to mobilize such a community, a bit more research might be done to see if this can coincide with another, equally as important idea/cause.
Did you know that April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month? And specifically April 3 2008 is the Day of Action: A Day to End Sexual Violence (http://tinyurl.com/2oft8h). Why should the simple push to point out good people overshadow that? And why couldn’t they co-exist and play off each other?
Thus I challenge anyone participating in Gary’s GPD2008 to also talk to someone about sexual violence. My local community in particular is participating in a “Can We Talk?” campaign asking each person to talk to at least one other about sexual violence, in any capacity on any variable subject. I hope you can see where I am going with this and the natural connection that can and should occur. If you are already calling on people to reach out and touch someone and act positively, then incorporate such an important cause which already was asking to use the day to do the same.
(you can find me on Twitter @mcompton.)

GPD08 is now live!
Gary, a kewl idea. I’m in. At the risk of “excluding” others who deserve the same kudos, I’ll START with three people in my life who are Good People (without a doubt).
1. My boss! Yes, you read that right… Many people just don’t “like” their boss, or they can’t wait to leave their job, or (^*#!, snarl, gripe, groan, whimper, whine, whaaa, etc.) I am very fortunate to have a boss who cares about me as a human being first, then as a worker & professional member of his team. Donald Cook! I doubt he has a Twitter account (yet), but we’ll work on that, OK? A Shout Out to a caring boss and a Good Person - Mr. Donald Cook, Arl, VA. GPD08-1.
2. The young guy who serves as a lifeguard at our Community Clubhouse during the day/early evening (indoor pool and hot tub). Although he has a very long, boring day he is always friendly, serious, smiling, alert, and on watch. He is a Good Person, helping others as a lifeguard (for our HOA).
GPD08-2.
3. Recently, I had the pleasure to reunite with a long lost friend who also lives in the NCR (near Wash, DC). I looked her up on LinkedIn and found her working less than ONE MILE from where I work in Arlington; can you say serendipity? I had dinner with her, her beau, and her DAD who happened to be in town then for a short visit. While she is *also* a Good Person, I’ll talk about her later. Her father is one of my former pastors from my younger days near Lake Norman, NC. A Shout Out to Dr. Paul Kercher, one of my favorite people who influenced me when I was young. It was as if time stood still and the only thing that had changed was our ages. I look forward to our next visit and catching up with his entire family and my childhood friend. Good PEOPLE! GPD08-3.
Gary, I don’t need to mention you as that is a given.
Cheers,
Cheri (aka “DoxieDenDiva”, thanks to YOU, GaryVee)

I have many great people in my life which makes it difficult to single out one so I’ll go with two. My sons, Tyler and Heath, they have opened my eyes and taught me many life lessons. Tyler’s compassion for humanity and love for us crazy humans. A friend of his once said, it’s as though it’s all he’s ever known, she pegged it.
And Heath, his spirit and smiles infectious. To know him is to love him. I know I’m partial but they make our world a greater place to be.

Love the Good People day and Gary’s message of thanks. My husband and I had some silent moments of gratitude together this morning and it set the tone for the day early on. I brought this ‘attitude of gratitude’ to my staff meeting of 50+ this morning and passed it on — and asked them to pass it on. IT IS CONTAGIOUS! Imagine the power of all this ‘pay it forward’ energy. One drop raises the ocean. Blessings to All, GARY WE APPRECIATE YOU! Joy

Andy Stuckey and Katherine Slingluff
When my girlfriend Laura and I moved to New York City almost eight months ago we had no jobs, no apartment and big plans. My cousin Andy and his wife Katherine live in Brooklyn and happened to be out of town for two weeks just after we arrived in the city. They basically GAVE us their wonderful apartment for two weeks so we could get settled in . It was such a kind, humbling gesture and I know we’ll never be able to pay them back…but we’ll try! Thanks so much to Andy and Katherine for being Good People.
Check their websites too…

So my blog post was “don’t be a bad person” ….However there is the flip side of using photos from photographers. I would LOVE to have more people ASk to use my photos and ME say “Yes” just hook up a link and we’ll help eachother out. Many people do this, and I will post some tips on “How photographers’s and Bloggers can be friends” (afterall I am Both!)
