What are your top three ways to “introduce” yourself to new people on Facebook, Twitter, etc.?
April 25th, 2008 at 12:07 pm
Hey Gary,
Here’s a question I have been wanting to ask, but haven’t for fear of looking like a total newb.
My wife and I recently moved to the Bay Area, and we are looking for a some mid-range, newb-friendly wineries. We were able to make it out to DeLoach for your party, and had a great time. But now we would like a quick 2-3 top GV wineries to hit up.
Thanks for everything.
Have an AWESOME Friday.

What tech do you have in your wine cellar - temperature monitoring, cameras, computer hookups etc. Email/@marklise/froek. Cheers!

Hi Gary, How are you? I have 2 questions for you (well, if you count the last sentence, make that 3!). First, I didn’t know til recently that you are married so I am wondering how you manage your time with your wife, your parents/ siblings, your business, your media appearances and your business on a day to day basis. It’s VERY hard for me to manage/ juggle all these things and I’m impressed with the energy you have and how you always seem to be “up.” So what’s your secret? 2nd question is: since the whole Web 2.0 movement is happening out west and some of America’s best vineyards are out west, would you ever consider moving to San Fran?
April 25th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
Gary, I’m beginning to use video on my local news blog that covers happenings in an historic Pennsylvania village near Harrisburg. Currently, I’m using a point-and-shoot camera that does not have a jack for an external microphone. What kind of digital video camera would be a better way to go for doing things like “player of the game” interviews for the local baseball team?
Also, could you suggest I good wine to purchase for a newbie wine drinker?
You do great stuff, Gary. Thanks!

Q and A: Do you like my twitter name?
April 25th, 2008 at 12:14 pm
Hey Gary,
Great episode #451, I enjoyed it thoroughly! I’m a big fan of your philosophy (and show), and I’m starting my own company soon thanks to you and many other inspirational speakers!
I wanted to send you an e-mail because I went to this great winery down in Homestead Florida, and they have AWESOME wines. They’re made with tropical fruits instead of grapes, and they were a blast! (Forgive me if you have different thoughts on this subject, although they DO call them wines). It’s called Schnebly’s Winery (http://www.schneblywinery.com/) and I think you should give it a shot!
I also follow you on twitter, and I think your posts are hilarious! (I’m @thedonz if you wanna join my network!)
My question to you is, since my business is primarily going to be internet-based sales through a web portal, what type of resources do you recommend (like sites, books, etc…) for creating a powerful web 2.0 like website? I’m looking to have a facebook-like interaction with my customers, and to deliver an awesome product of course.
Thanks for the opportunity for the Q&A!!

Hey Gary,
I just started following you on Wine Library TV and on Twitter so I’m not sure if you’ve talked much about this before. I was wondering what it took for your family to turn your parent’s shop into what it is today. Specifically, what do you attribute to the success? Was it all just hard work and dedication, did you take advantage of any specific marketing technique, and what risks were involved? I really want to know if you had to sacrifice anything to help the shop grow and what chances you took. Was it all a stroll in the park, or were there any times where you were worried that maybe you took a risk that wouldn’t pay off.
Thanks for your time,
Darren

I had many questions. I tried to record a video answer but it didn’t work. Well, my questions were in my email and I really hope that you could find 3 minutes to read it. I love the Q&A thing too, that’s all about hat
Anyway, have a good week-end.

Here’s another question, not necessarily for Gary but for all his peeps… wonder why more people don’t have questions for Gary?! Something wrong with the internets?
April 25th, 2008 at 12:27 pm
What’s the #1 thing all of us should do to expand the reach of ourselves/our personal brands in this Web 2.0/social media era? As someone who has struggled for years to find/build a community online, I think I’ve taken the first step by being a bit more honest in what I write and how I put myself out there. But my Website still only gets 12 hits or so a day.
I guess this comes back to my central problem in life right now, which is this: I’m a social person. I like human beings. But I work in an office by myself for 9-10 hours a day and I live far away from anything remotely cool or cultural. The Web seems like the place for me, when it comes to connecting, but I don’t have a lot of time. So, I guess this relates back to my first question: How do I expand my reach, make new friends, etc. when there just isn’t a lot of time to do so? What’s the one thing I should be doing that I’m not doing?
April 25th, 2008 at 12:27 pm
I have BeerUtopia.com and got a lot of twitters from friends and viewers say Oh no, Gary is doing BeerLibtv. To which I said cool. Question 1:do you believe competition is good for this industry? Question 2: What are your longterm business goals in New Media? Question 3: Have you tried any wines from Arkansas? And question 3: I am here in Arkansas and want to know why you say no to McFadden?
April 25th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
This question stems from the fact that you seem to be able to get things done. Period. I was just informed about a job opening up within the company that I currently work for. I know several of the other candidates applying and know that I am way more qualified… only not on paper. My question is how can I get people to overlook the cold, hard facts of a resume and see the deeper aspects that would make me the ideal candidate for the position?
April 25th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
Here is my question to you?
As you are a connaisseur of wine from all over the world - how do you like Rosé wine in general.
How do you rate the Rosé from south of france against other rosés from all over the world?
We here love ti sipping it in the herat with ice-cubes in ther - is this cool or not?

will you do a WLTV hoodie? I need a new hooded sweatshirt!
Also, better hair: Ravishing Rick Rude or Miss Elizabeth?
have a fabulous day!

GV,
My question echos Chris Clark’s question about expanding our personal brands and expanding our reach. He ask for the #1 thing, so I’ll ask numbers 2 and 3. Help us Gary-won-Kenobi, you’re our only hope…
April 25th, 2008 at 12:58 pm
I was wondering your thoughts on the US’s 21 drinking age, which, aside from countries or cultures that ban alcohol, is probably the oldest in the world. Being from Canada and having lived in the states, I personally think starting at a young age with parents teaching moderation is better.
thoughts?
April 25th, 2008 at 1:07 pm
Hey, I come from Slovenia (near Italy) and we have a big wine culture. Here in my region we have the oldest productive vineyard in the world. Our wine law permits only the very best wine to be offered for sale in 75cl bottles and, as a result, some wines are top notch.
My question is: did you ever taste any wine from Slovenia? In which show?
April 25th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
Hi Gary,
I’m 18 and unable to buy wine in Ontario, however, I watch the show because of your charisma and energy, and since I have become a vayniac, I consider you my role model and to be honest, a hero.
You have brought so many things to the table to do with life and interaction that even for a viewer who isn’t interested in wine, WLTV is so much more than that.
So my Question is, can there be any part of you that can commit itself to the show (I know its a trick question). Sorry Gary, heres the real question. Nikolai Volkov & Iron Sheik as greatest tagteam of all time?
April 25th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
hey gary love what you do but have a few questions
1. I am a diehard Bengals fan and was wondering your thoughts on the whole Chad Johnson situation?
2. Can you do a WLTV on restaurant wine list? what i mean is how to read them maybe visit a few places in NYC and do a quick show about the lists?
3. Why after 450 episodes have you not done a show on Txacoli I know you must know what this grape is, right?
April 25th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
Hi Gary,
You are an inspiration for me, the first generation immigrant who is trying to establish himself in this fabulous country.
Do you still speak Russian? Your dad in one of the videos still has a pretty thick Russian accent.
I am from Kishinev, Moldova (not exactly Russia). Where are you from originally?
Thanks!
April 25th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
Not at all related to wine, new media etc. but…. What’s your all-time favorite television show and what’s your favorite show currently in production?
April 25th, 2008 at 1:25 pm
I wanna know what it takes to spend a few hours with you, like a mentoring day, behind the scenes with you. I’m in Edison…and I have a friend who works for The Jets, he he
No joke…on all counts
Looking forward GV, and, your interview w/Yanik was un-freakin’ real my friend.

Q&A: What is your favorite music. Style, artist, etc?
April 25th, 2008 at 1:28 pm
How do you figure out what you have to offer to this New Media society? Do you figure it out before you start offering or is more along the lines of starting and then figuring it out as you go.
I want to be part of this new movement, but I am having a hell of a time figuring out what I can offer that isn’t already out there.
April 25th, 2008 at 1:33 pm
Gary, what is your take on connecting through generations. I did a post about this on my blog the other day but since you’ve been involved in this space and have seen a lot, I’d like your opinion.
A lot of people like Brogan, Holtz, Scoble, Arrington and you are in this space, but don’t you feel like we’re in a bubble?
How do you communicate with people older and younger than yourself? I doubt you would use Twitter for your parents.
April 25th, 2008 at 1:33 pm
Hey I’v been trying to for years to get my GF, now fiance, into wine. More specifically red wine. Whites have been hit or miss with her mostly liking the sweeter wines. What would be a good way to ease her into reds so she can great they can be?
Thanks Gary, take care.
April 25th, 2008 at 1:38 pm
Hi Gary,
I love the site and your posts. My question is how do I go about getting the traffic and awareness of getting my blog noticed? I’m in the process of setting up a blog, that will feature vlog product reviews of golf gear and all other things golf related. Besides letting friends and family know about it, how can I get other golfers to view my blog? This ties into the related question by Chris Clark.
Thanks
Rob

Gary,
Love the show. Q: How do you incorporate wine into your daily life? Which stock ones do you go to or do you always drink new stuff?
April 25th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
Who are your “heroes” in the business world? What life events drove you to become such an active business person? And what advice do you have for those aspiring to do something on their own? Love your stuff Gary. Thanks for the e-mail yesterday btw!

Hi Gary - I work for a non profit, and I have been given a project to integrate a social networking platform. The trouble is, the average age of the member is 55+ and through experience, this demographic is tough to get on board with advancing technology and modern web adoption. The lifeline of the association hinders on students getting on board at the beginning of their careers, but they have a much easier time trying new things which are online community based. My question to you is what do you think is the best way to get people who didn’t grow up with the Internet on board in to this exciting social tool while also enticing students as well. I would love to talk to you about this more in depth as I have a ton of ideas, just lack the time/resources to work them all out.
BTW, all of the work you do for the online community is amazing and much appreciated. Please keep it up as I have gotten great ideas out of it.

Big G,
I have become a fan of garyvaynerchuk.com as well as WLTV. Your advice seems to be true and from the Heart and I like that.
My question is: I’m a Film/Video Editor in Los Angeles and I’m looking to get more involved with the Internet on a Business level. Selling ETC. Do you recommend a Book or Website that I may research to help me get started with this new Venture.
April 25th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
Gary, rather than talking about how wonderful you are (and you are) can you instead talk about how wonderful I am?
April 25th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
Hi Gary,
I really admire your brand building talents. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us!
I produce and host a modestly successful podcast (http://www.intheboxpodcast.com). We’ve had some success building an audience and getting interesting guests for the show. But after a year in existence we’re still not reaching the number of people I think we could. Despite our specialized niche, we could do better.
It’s a big world and there’s a bigger audience out there for everything, even us.
It dawned on me recently that perhaps audio podcasts have some inherent challenges, namely, competing with video. I love listening to NPR, but the truth is I spend waaaay more time watching TV and online video.
Let’s face it: the instant gratification of video–I can hear you *and* see you–can’t be beat. I know I prefer it. I think most human beings do.
No doubt there are insanely popular audio only podcasts out there (written blogs too). But it seems like the future is video, whether you create, distribute it, or just link to it on your own blog.
My question: When it comes to building an audience online does the medium matter *that* much?
Thanks again for WLTV. You rock my wine world, man!

Who will the Jets pick for number 1 this year. And will I see you and AJ on TV?
April 25th, 2008 at 3:38 pm
My question: can I have ur babiez??
Ok, here’s a more serious question: I’m sure you get to travel quite a bit. What’s your favorite place (city, country, etc) you’ve ever visited?
April 25th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
I’ve got to say thank you for doing this. Great idea!
So, here’s my QOTD: Since I can’t actually try wine legally here in the U.S. for another eleven months and six days, what do you think is the best way for me to develop my palette so that when the big 2-1 comes along, I’ll be ready to enjoy, and know, what I’m tasting?
Thanks again Gary! Enjoy the draft!

What do you want to do with life that you haven’t done before?
April 25th, 2008 at 4:27 pm
Whats up Gary, my question is this…do you have your own personal wine collection? do you have a cellar or are you just storing your wine in a wine cooler??
Any future ideas for a cellar??
I have just always wondered what your collection is like???
April 25th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
I’m a very optimistic person and can tell you exude the same qualities in your videos. But IF/when you find yourself (or your environment) in some ‘down’ times or where negativity could fall, how do you counteract that in your everyday life?
I’d love to hear what you think.
April 25th, 2008 at 4:30 pm
Why isn’t there a WLTV tshirt in a color i like?
April 25th, 2008 at 5:02 pm
Hey Gary!
Love your passion! I’ve got a handful of them for ya. Here goes:
1) What is the biggest thing you’ve learned about yourself since you started doing WLTV back in ‘06?
2) Name 3 “big dreams” that you are chasing after right now with all your heart.
3) Have you ever considered starting your own vineyard? If so, where would you like to have it, and what would the name of your vineyard be?
4) What are some big social issues that you are passionate about, and how do you see this forum (web video) being used to help those in need?
Thanks so much for sharing your passion for life with us!
Cheers,
Ralph

Gary,
Planning to send a more detailed version of this to you via email for privacy sake, but wanted to put it out here as well, in case any readers wanted to chime in.
As part of my job I’m going to be helping w/ the promotion of a book that will be released soon, specifically marketing it online and to various bloggers. The authors are my bosses and don’t have the same digital network established like you, so I’m wondering what I can and should do to try and get them up on the Amazon list like yours. I don’t believe they have time to get connected like you are, but these are two people that are connected to lots of people, just not digitally. You and many readers would probably know who one or both of them are.
Any helpful insights you want to share would be incredibly appreciated.
Thanks. you rock.
April 25th, 2008 at 6:56 pm
Hey Gary, I’m a big fan of your blog. Your video posts are inspiring and enlightening (hopefully these ideas will fuel more excellent posts for some time to come).
With that said, I’m graduating from the University of Illinois in two weeks and am *still* without a job. I want to work for the National Basketball Association as a social media expert.
My question is this: How can I get noticed and hired by the NBA? The sooner the better.
I have a unique, award-winning NBA blog. I was wondering if there’s something witty I can do with my blog to let people know I’m actively seeking work. Thanks again for taking time to respond!
April 25th, 2008 at 7:17 pm
Great site Gary!
We met at FOWA and I had bfast with AJ here in Boston a couple weeks back.
My question is; who designed this blog; how’d you get it done? Lots of folks want a solid personal brand and I’m guessing you didn’t just download some free template and slap it on your Wordpress site.
All the best,
Dean

April 25th, 2008 at 8:49 pm
hi gary!
here is my question: I’m a marketing student and i live in Bordeaux, and having seen your vid about the Bordeaux wine for strategic benefits, and knwoing that you are a wine expert, i want to know how is the Bordeaux doing in the USA, how do you rate it compared to the other wines, and have you ever been to Bordeaux?
April 25th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
Gary- what advice could you give to an aspiring yet totally confused high school student who wants to eventually make it in the competitive business/technology field? Any insight to help the young Jedi padawan would be great.
Thanks and good luck with the book.
April 25th, 2008 at 11:53 pm
Hey Gary,
Keep kicking it!
Q1: What has been your darkest moment in your business career? That moment where you may have said I’m done with it, I’m hanging it up or the tough time where maybe the money was drying up.
Q2: What kept you going?
Q3: The fun question… When are you going to try some Scotch and Whiskeys on the show? You have said in the past that you are a fan. If you do try some on the show you’ll have to try “Red Breast” it is an awesome whiskey. If you can’t find it I’ll bring you some.
Cheers bud!
Rick - (psst the sangria revolution is coming!)
April 26th, 2008 at 2:23 am
Hey Gary, I have two completely unrelated questions. Q1) As someone who is just getting into wine, what would you suggest as a good “starter”? Q2) It’s obvious that you’re incredibly passionate about everything that you do, but doing it all the time and reaching out to everyone must get tiring. How do you avoid burnout? I have trouble just keeping up with blogging and school work!
Thanks!
April 26th, 2008 at 10:58 am
Gary,
First off, thanks for the great show! Truly changing the wine world, whether they like it or not! Congrats on the book!
Second, my question is this. Have you ever considered doing a Wine Library TV Benefit CD/Concert? Your brand is growing exponentially right now and it is a good time to leverage that celebrity into benefit for the community. I am sure that there are a host of wine related charities and causes to support. Also, like the marketing of your new book, there could be a Web 2.0 Social Media take involved. (All the artists on the disc only collaborate online, widgets created for sites announcing details about the Disc/Concert)
Please consider this question seriously, your brand is extremely strong and the wine world has been waiting for a voice like yours for a long time. Music and wine have walked hand in hand for ages, and Web 2.0 New Media are changing both quickly and drastically. Check out my band @ omegaprojectmusic.com - Let me know if you need any help spearheading a Wine Library Cd/Benefit Concert.

How’s it going Gary?
First I wanna say thanks for being out there with your audience and interacting. Its things like this and your twitter that keep me coming back (and subscribing). (I still have a year till I’m 21, and you have me interested in wines! That’s how crazy good you are at this.)
Anyways, I’m an industrial design student and I’ve got a few quick questions related to my experience.
1. If you had the ability to go back and tell one thing to your younger self (any time in life): first, would you do it at all? and Second, if you did what would you tell yourself?
2. How do you stay organized in life? I’m trying to juggle my heavy design workload, family, friends and writing a blog, etc. and it’s quite the challenge to keep up!
3. Is there any product in the wine world that you think could be made better?
Thanks Gary!
PS. You should try and get on This Week In Tech to discuss social networking with Calacanis and Leo! That’d be a great episode! Plus Leo is now gonna broadcast from his place in the wine country so it’d be right up your alley!
April 26th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
Gary I really respect you business knowlege, thanks for some really good stuff on GV.com… My question for you is:
I am opening a small wine bar in my home town and will have a website, besides the general information like my menus some pictures and a way to collect email for sending out information what else should a business like mine use this media for. Please keep in mind my will be very tight so some things will be difficult to do. I am only average at this web stuff..
Thanks for your time..

Hey Gary,
Wow. Two things: 1) I saw you during the draft! Hopefully the Jets will get good things from Gholston. 2) I also just watched WLTV episode #148… what a stupid I am! I’m sorry for asking you the one question you probably get the most out of new viewers, and the one that you have definitely answered quite thoroughly. So, if you will, I’d like to ask you two completely different questions instead, and an answer to either one would be much appreciated.
What do you think is the purpose of humanity, and who would be on your ideal 2008 MLB fantasy team?
Thanks again so much for both having this Q and A session, and for filming WLTV.
Sincerely,
Aaron Sherman
April 26th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
Is it just me, or did I see you on tv? I am pretty sure I saw you screaming with all the other jets fans.
April 26th, 2008 at 4:55 pm
Kind of follow-up questions to Senor Sangria’s question [above]:
when did you ‘know’ in your gut or in your heart that wine was going to take off and you wanted to put your energies into expanding the store and your presence online? Was there a defining moment? Also what made you decide to do Wine Library TV? Last question (which you’ve may have answered on Wine TV–I haven’t seen all of the episodes): do you get palate fatigue after you taste all day?
thanks!

Hey Gary,
I’m a writer of a blog called dchighway.com that is satirical reviews of classic b-movies and cult films. It’s been going for about a year and has gone from 9 visitors a day to over 7000 a month. The thing is I want to take this to the next level but am not sure what my next steps should be. I’m considering writing a b-movie book. Sort of following in footsteps of Joe Bob Briggs the king of b-movie reviews but I want to carve my own path. What do you suggest in regards to some possible next steps. People to get connected with? books to read? marketing agencies? Thanks for any advice and please check out some of my reviews and let me know what you think.
Keep bringing the thunder,
-Steve

Gary,
I was watching the draft, and the highlights on ESPN this weekend, and thought they did a close up of you when they announced Gholston as the 1st rounder. Were you there ? I’m a transplanted fan in Wisconsin who has been cringing every year at draft time. With the pick of Revis in ‘07, and now Gholston, do you think they are getting smarter with their first picks ? J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets !!!

Griff, I had similar questions as I am new to wine. I found this on winelibrary:

It should help us a lot.
Great thanks, Gary. You are a real online celebrity :))

Hi Gary, so I kinda have 2 questions for you. One is with social branding…I have a real passion for cycling. I was a very good junior racer and at 22 want to get back into it before I’m to old to have a shot and since I also love the social networking stuff online I think that is a good way to branch out. What is a good way to really do this other than the obvious having accounts on twitter, facebook etc?
and second. how can you move past the fact that as you try to move up in the world people are always there trying to sabatoge and bring you down when you are succeeding and they aren’t. I care about my co-workers and want them to succeed, so why do we not get the same in return?
Thanks, Sam
April 27th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
Gary,
Good stuff, I like your approach to graining business in a relatively organic manner through the use of 21st century media. Your really get giving as much to your “friends” as possible which is awesome!
Question: I am going to Seattle at the end of August and making my way down to Portland OR. What Wineries are the must sees while I’m out there? I want to hit Columbia Valley, Yakima and Wala Wala.
Cheers…
April 27th, 2008 at 2:25 pm
Hey Gary,
There are so many sales gurus out there writing about sales processes & strategies (pretty much read and partly practiced and taught them all) and other ways how to improve your sales.
I think traditional sales is broken, especially for small businesses. Cold calling doesn’t create relationships, it destroys them. The pushy sales guy creates an aura of desperation around himself that is as attractive as insect repellent and there is never enough time to go through all the hoops that they ‘teach’ us to get the next big gig.
Yet millions of small businesses have to go out there every day, week , month to generate leads and turn them into clients while they are working on projects that pay the bills.
What’s your take on the new way of doing sales for small business?
Best,
Peter
PS Thanks for your great shows - I love authentic stuff and people. I think authenticity is the new top currency of marketing, in fact it should replace the word marketing in most cases (Maybe a new term: Authentising instead of marketing…

Hi @garyvee! What is your thought about Twitter Karma? I started following you on Good People Day and even wrote a post on my blog about a kid I know who shaved his head and raised a bunch of dough for kids with cancer! (http://hellohappypitbulls.typepad.com/hello_happy_pitbulls/2008/04/talking-about-people-who-do-good-things.html)
But you’re not following me - even though I have a lot to say

Hi Gary,
I really enjoy your posts! I just launched my blog which features video reviews of golf products. My question is how do I go about building my brand around my blog? In terms of getting more exposure and views.
Thanks

Gary,
I lurk more than i write, and for this i apologize. My question stems along the same lines that i have read above. You are happy and energetic in a majority of your posts / podcasts. Noone that i know can sustain a tempo like that. What is you secret? How do you manage to have more good days than bad?
April 28th, 2008 at 8:05 am
Hey Gary,
I’m writing my MA Dissertation on panprojection, which is related in a big way to your idea of transparency. I’m considering doing a chapter on Community Celebrities (likes yourself). My questions are: is there any book or business philosophy you got your idea of transparency from? And if it’s a G-Vayn original, would you be open to answering questions about such things once the chapter’s being written?

What is the best way to get intrinsically motivated?? How do you get yourself pumped up to go and do those things that we all hate to do, but make a difference. And how do you keep on track????

What do you think of the NY Jets 2008 draft selections?
April 28th, 2008 at 6:06 pm
Hey Gary,
I’m a senior chemical engineering student from Pittsburgh (GO STILLERS!). A friend of mine and myself are interested in getting into the wine production world (maybe starting our own vineyard/winery). Is the market swamped, or is it a place which smaller-scale new wineries can break into the industry? Would really love a detailed response as possible.

what’s your take on judaism? I noticed a mezuzah on your dad’s doorpost in episode 100 and your grandfather’s name was shya, and you ate matzah. was your grandfather orthodox?

Yeah Garror, I got a question for you. What is the best way to get/”pick up” tickets to the NFC Championship Game at the Vet in Philly? Got any ideas?
April 29th, 2008 at 12:36 am
Kind of a lame question but… I’m 30 and grew up with pretty much all the same shows, movies and games as you. I’m just curious if we’ll ever see some GI JOE’S on the ThunderShow? lol
Hope you and your family have a great week!

hey gary. jq here. i’m a guy that’s done a little bit of a lot of things. i’ve been a dj. i was signed as a rapper. i’ve been in movies and on tv. i’ve also been a janitor. i’ve made music for commercial stuff like nike basketball. i’ve taught at a university as a guest professor and i myself haven’t even graduated college. now i’m working in my family business, a 133 year-old pharmacy, and starting (with my brother– it’s all about the fam) smallflower tv, a video blog about natural health and body care, because i was inspired by winelibrarytv.com which i’m a huuuuuge fan of. thank you for that. while this is going on, my other brother and i (once again– it is allllll about the fam) are writing directing and starring in a play that’s going up on navy pier in chicago this summer before we take it to scotland in august for the fringe festival. and that’s not even all of the pots i’ve got my paws all up into. now i don’t say all this to brag. at all. i am blessed and i know that. i don’t complain. ever. really. but after all this, i feel sometimes that i am a “jack of all trades, but an ace of none.” am i spreading myself too thin? is that even possible? i don’t measure my success monetarily, strictly with love. and in that way, i feel like the most successful guy in the world, regardless of my career fortunes. but sometimes i think to myself, how can i still be broke and struggling and living check to check after all this? i don’t even think i’m owed anything, and every day i feel like it’s a great day to be alive. but i still get frustrated sometimes. my dad, from pakistan (and extreme poverty) IS the american dream. he says that if you work hard and have good intentions the rest will work itself out. is that true? is that all there is? regardless, i’ma keep on keepin on.
go bears. (and i ain’t mad at the jets).

My question disappeared…
What advice do you have for aspiring winemakers?
April 29th, 2008 at 6:31 pm
It says my comment is still awaiting moderation… I don’t know if you can see it, so I’m posting it again:
Hey Gary,

Interaction has become so easy, to powerful, so awesome… but also so overwhelming.
As someone who blogs on three sites, has 5 email addresses, IM on 4 networks, twitters and has accounts on a handful of social networking webites… my question to you is: how do we separate the good communication from the noise?
To clarify, what I mean by good communication is communication that is of value. As businesses, we want to hear what our customers are saying (feedback good or bad, tips, suggestions, appreciation, etc), but the message is often overrun by chatter and useless communication that serves no real purpose (spam, blatant plugging of some product, abuse of communication tools, forced viral marketing, product placement in blog posts, etc, etc).
If that question would take to long to answer, no worries.. how about this one: What wine should I drink tonight?
Thanks,
- Nick

Gary-
We have a single brick and mortar shoe store in Central Washington State and am constantly bombarded with the question “Why don’t you sell online?”. Our greatest issue is how do we take the personality and feel of my 88 year old business and portray that online? How do we take the unique odors of leather and shoe polish, combine that with the sounds of our repair machinery, the eclectic mix of items we sell and the dog that greats you at the door and put it on a website? I’d like to think of myself as somewhat web savvy, however this is a task that has kept me from having much of a web presence. Thanks for your time and although I’m a beer guy, I sure enjoy all you do!
Your friend,
Josh (Shoebum)

Hi Gary,
Thanks for being so open with the public and your fans. I to do share your tenets and use it only with those I trust. Going forward that will change.
I have a couple of questions:
1) In order to grow Wine Library from a few million to $50m did you use any unusual marketing, PR or promotional tactics? Apart from social marketing, what would you do differently if you had this time again?
2) Given that you are living out social media with all your engagements and I see that on your twitter last night you were thinking of starting another vlog (!!!) what support network do you have to help you manage your time and achieve your objectives ie who’s in your power team? Secretary, PA, editor etc
And finally, when are you coming to London?!

I can certainly relate to JQ above and sometimes share in his frustration as well as the elation of having ones hands in all those pots.
This book proposes that we all have intrinsic (10pt for that word use) value in just being who they are.
I think that energy storage in our life is like a flywheel, that we get as much as we put in, and that all the energy that we have put in over many years helps keep us moving.
I am intrigued as to how large a support staff of friends you have to facilitate your frolicking through your work day.

Gary,
Do you a favorite piece of sports memorabilia?
May 8th, 2008 at 12:20 am
Been following you online for about a month now and I was just wondering.
With all of your passion and vibe, what is your view and perception of the Seattle Pike Place Fishmongers?
May 9th, 2008 at 10:25 am
Hey Gary,
I really appreciate your attitude when it comes to your fans, and it’s great that you maintain this kind of communication! I’ve got a couple of quick questions for you.
1) Myself and a couple of other guys are working on a start-up right now, doing some IT stuff, do you have any tips for getting a business off the ground in the first couple years?
2) I’m a member of the Canadian Contingent (Montreal, QC specifically), and I was wondering if you could give me some tips on getting wine up here. The selections at the SAQ (government-run liquor stores) are generally not great, and I know it would cost me an arm and a leg to bring the stuff in from outside the country. I’d love to try some of the wines you mention on the show but can never find them. What can I do? Also, would you ever thing about working out some kind of method of shipping wines from WL up to Canada?
Thanks a lot,
-Nick

Hi Gary, your unbridled enthusiasm towards life and work is contagious and it’s an example to follow to avoid fall prey of depression and negativity which threat to attack us every day. Anyway, without further ado, the questions:
1) How do you address those moments in life or your career where you feel you’ve hit a brick wall and nothing ever seems to go right? It’s easy to declare oneself an optimist in calm times, but facing the grim situations in life and still be one is not (I’m working hard on it).
2) Maybe you’ve heard of this so-called Attraction Law. I would even say that you ARE the definition of that. Any thoughts on this?

37 signals sounded familiar to me, oh yeah, they make the basecamp that I use at my part-time job.
QOTD: When are you going to answer these questions?
Okay, why is twitter hot. I love it, but why?
May 10th, 2008 at 5:26 pm
Gary, late comer to the party here as far as making my question, long time follower, and long time watcher of “The Thunder Show”
First off, you RAWKED out on Donny. I can’t tell you how much I loved that show!
Question: I am a woodturner. Woodturning is my passion, my air, my expression. So my question to you is: How does an artist such as myself who only has so much time to produce product for sale with my own two hands kick it up another notch to were I can generate income with my knowledge, and my passion for the industry?
To preface the question:
1.I am streaming live on blog TV and drawing decent numbers.
2. I have a blog where I explain my artistic process as well as tell the story of my art.
3. I am beginning to prouce podcast called Woodturning and Creative arts.
4. I have already been approached by large companies in my industry to help in their social media projects as well as possible sponsorships.
Gary, I am working full time, putting all of my free time into my passion of woodturning and social media! I want to support my family with my passion and my love!
Thank you
Keith Burtis
PS. Thanks for doing what you do!

You a wild man….. just like in college! When you coming to see all your old peeps in the bean town?
May 19th, 2008 at 11:51 pm
Hi Gary,
My husband is probably your biggest fan since he discovered your show about 6 months ago. He’s started buying wine from you and has it shipped to my work (its been stolen from our home before). Anyway, long story, but now everyone at work thinks I’m an alcoholic as I receive packs of wine from your store.
The reason for this comment is that its his birthday tomorrow, May 20th and it would be awesome if you could give him a shout out! It would really make his day, week, year!
Thanks,
Alison

If you could meet 7 LIVING people in the world right now, who would they be? Why would you meet them? What would you ask them?
May 26th, 2008 at 9:47 pm
Okay Gary…I’m chas’in you hard now…LOL.
You say ask a question and you’ll answer it. My question is how to become a similar persona as to what you’ve built but in my niche of golf. Golfers are rabid, but unfortunately my specialty is a small niche of golf which is “fitness for better golf”. I totally believe in it, as a broken body will NEVER play good golf, and most golfers are broken. The only problem is that fitness is one of the hardest “sells” on the planet. I feel if I can bring my passion and knowledge closer to my market like you’ve done, it should put me over the edge and closer to my income and success goals.
What is your advice for me? I have the potential to be a “Gary V” in my niche as my personality believe it or not is quite similar to yours.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Mike

Gary,
I’ve got a decent size collection of wine, a little over 300 bottles. Approximately 80% of them I have a good idea of when they should be consumed (via cellartracker) but there’s a large amount of them I’m not sure. Besides e-mailing each producer, is there another good source you know of that I can use to find out when I should be drinking these wines?
