So many people ask me daily how I manage all the “noise” I get everyday. Email, Facebook, Pownce, twitter ect. I break it down for you in this video!
How to cut through the Noise?

Word of mouth is indeed the king.
I keep hearing people all over the internet saying “i’m getting into wine lately thanks to my friend Gary Vaynerchuk (at WLTV)”
The last 2 i remember, Kevin Rose on a Diggnation
And Sarah Lane on an episode of Pop Siren.
You’re getting publicity just from being a nice guy.
And that is what i wish i saw more in business these days.
Keep up the great work Gary,
I’ll keep watching.. and drinking.
April 30th, 2008 at 4:07 pm
Nicely said! You might overlook something that means the world to someone else. Responding to e-mails and messages “makes” you human and allows for people to connect with you on a more personal level. It shows you care.
see you on Twitter (@topicm)

Word of mouth is indeed the King.
I keep hearing from various internet people things like “i’ve been getting into wine a lot lately thanks to my friend Gary Vaynerchuk (over at Wine Library TV)”
Kevin Rose keeps doing it on Diggnation.
And i think Sarah Lane did it on an episode of Pop Siren.
You’re getting publicity through being a nice guy.
And that doesn’t seem to happen enough in business these days.
You’re so passionate about wine, that people see you and think “i want to be THAT passionate about wine”, or at least about something.
I love garyvaynerchuk.com
These little videos make me want to make more of myself.
Thank you Gary.
April 30th, 2008 at 4:09 pm
It always makes me smile when I see a response from you, and if I can do that for someone else, you better believe I will. I have a couple of blogs that get about 500 hits a day, nothing amazing. BUT I appreciate each and every person who reads it and spends that time with me.
April 30th, 2008 at 4:09 pm
Amen brother! I think a lot of people don’t realize that the web has broken whatever barriers word of mouth marketing may have previously had. The speed of information today is redonculously fast and it can either help you or hurt you exponentially.
April 30th, 2008 at 4:09 pm
didn’t mean to comment twice, i wrote out and comment, and it didn’t come up, so i rewrote it, feel free to delete one.
Sorry
April 30th, 2008 at 4:11 pm
“all the noise is positive to me”
Great approach, Gary.
April 30th, 2008 at 4:12 pm
“Everything is important”
Pretty sure you just gave away a trade secret. For some reason many businesses and people forget this. I’m sure that your success can be attributed to you following this principle. Great post.
April 30th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
Love the idea of “not weeding through the noise”. People are so use to not hearing back from people, that when you do, it makes them feel like they are somebody… Because they are!
Great video!

Gary - i am one of your more recent disciples and as someone who feels in a state of constant overload because of the number of conversations i am having simultaneous (both active and passive) your latest video makes me think that while this is important (critically) one must manage their expectations on how much ELSE they can keep up with in addition to their in-stream.
Its a challenge for me as a business owner because while i would LOVE the time to keep up with everyone, I only have so many hours in the day…so the conversations tend to slip in favor of the hottest fire. Its all about organizing your day around what gets you the most bang.
Anyway, thanks, as always for the insight.

The last point you make may be the most important tidbit here. I’m glad you went the extra 14 seconds!
The odd side thing, random acquaintance can easily blossom into an amazing connection.
Well said, Gary.
April 30th, 2008 at 4:23 pm
Right on. So very true!
April 30th, 2008 at 4:23 pm
At the end of the day its just about doing the right thing. I get lots of late night emails from customers in New York and let me tell you, they really appreciate immediate responses that have a 3am timestamp! Of course, they think I am nuts but thats besides the point…
Yes, absolutely it’s good business. But it’s also good to not be a prick! There are quite a few people out there who give the illusion of being “accessible” when they really aren’t, or who don’t even have the courtesy to write back. (Ahem, some people on Twitter… I know, shocker.)
And thanks for writing back (so quickly too), Gary.
April 30th, 2008 at 4:23 pm

Good call…. Man, and I feel busy— I can’t imagine your load. But at least from my perspective, yeah: everyone is important. I have a bit of a problem always putting people over responsibilities. Any words on importance/priority of tasks vs. people?

Thank you Gary for spelling out - so eloquently - what I’ve been telling my 35,000 readers for years. It’s why I answer my own phone, every email, every tweet and comment. WOM - the stories people tell - was the first and still the best marketing tool ever invented.

This was great! I def don’t get as many emails as you, but I too get backed up with my measly 75 or so.. I agree that when you keep up the communication, it leads to great things when you least expect it:) Keep it up GV!

April 30th, 2008 at 5:02 pm
Amen to that!
With all of the so-called important email that I get, it’s the “noise” that usually makes my day.
April 30th, 2008 at 5:20 pm
Spot on again Gary. I wish more people had your attitude. Keep it up!!!
April 30th, 2008 at 7:34 pm
I believe that word of mouth is even more powerful than before as customers/viewers/readers/fans increasingly ignore traditional advertising in favour of endorsements and referrals.
Offline, WOM is the greatest boost for online businesses. I agree with Gary, if you had a bricks and mortar business you’d connect or respond with everyone who has contacted you. Why should it be different online. I’m always impressed to see subjects featured in syndicated blogs etc write responses to commenters! To me, that takes effort in addition to responding to every communication that lands in your inbox.
Gary, I saw you in Orlando at Strategic Profits and you were the highlight of the Seminar for me. I was too shy to come up and say hi, but next time I will!
Keep up the great work!
Your UK fan, Desiree

What you say is absolutely true. I’m just a newbie tweeter and, honestly, just heard of your show within the past 2 weeks (1997, eh? must be slow on the uptake, or not nearly serious enough about my oenology). Yet, somehow, now you’re on my radar and this weekend I recommended your show to some wine fiend friends of mine here in FL who also had never heard of you. You never know just where the most random thread will lead. I’ve definitely found that to be true in my own work in the nonprofit world, too. Look at every interaction as a potential opportunity - not for income, but for engagement, friendship and connection. You never know which random newbie might just pass you on to a whole new community, nor which opportunities you’ll miss because you dropped the ball on one of the “little people” who some call noise.

Thanks.
April 30th, 2008 at 11:14 pm
You are so right about word of mouth. When I get a review from a friend (be it good or bad) I find that I give it 10x the weight than I do a commercial or a random written response.
Keep on keeping on.
April 30th, 2008 at 11:29 pm
Words of wisdom. Much respect for having such integrity and value in your work. Cheers.
April 30th, 2008 at 11:37 pm
Gary,
Your words are changing my whole business plan. I have recently started a small recording studio in Toledo, OH. I am taking your words of wisdom and just writing it straight to my business plan. We are making audio recording an experience that is all about the musicians getting the best product we can provide. Its turning into an amazing community of musicians recording on other band’s albums, engineers are putting in triple the time they usually would and not charging any extra. We are trying to get involved in as many online networks (myspace, purevolume, facebook, twitter, last.fm) this is so exciting and I just had to let you know about the impact you are making here in Toledo. The customers love this and we are already booked for the next 6 months. I am watching WLTV and I don’t even drink alcohol.?!?! THANK YOU FOR CARING ABOUT PEOPLE.

Gary,
Great video man.
When I saw you speak in Orlando in Feb you said you answered EVERY email and at first I didn’t believe it but I sent you a follow-up email and you certainly did respond which earns you mad respect in my book.
I finally took your advice from that seminar and created my own social network on ning today.
One of my first blog posts is about an awesome new FREE app that you and your readers should find really useful to help manage their time.
Check it out: http://localsearchenginemarketing.ning.com

You always manage to reply to all of my emails and I appreciate it. I just wish you were not so popular because in the old days I would get a reply almost instantly.

Gary, you never fail to deliver the most profound philosophy in such a ’spacelimited’ format.
You’ll be known as ‘Prophet Gary’ soon.
Keep it up,

When I attended some Internet marketing seminars in the past, I was totally turned off by the (usually young men) gurus’ disdain for their customers, the little guys who make them rich. They talked about them in the elevators and halls where they thought no one was listening… and it was always disrespectful. I have unsubscribed from many a guru’s list because of those back room conversations… that weren’t back room enough.
Personally, I reply to every email and Tweet, and I pick up the phone myself. For me, it’s a great feeling to make another person’s day better just by being responsive to them, and maybe by helping them out with an answer to a question, a new idea or a useful tip.

Gary -
Awesome stuff here. So applicable in so many ways, but a message that’s easily forgotten.
I might ADDed, this attitude, mindset needs to be poured on top of the education system. Too many kids are looked at as problems early because teachers and parents cut through the noise and think kids that are a little hyper need a drug to “fix” them.
Amazon #1 baby!!! It’s gonna happen. You deserve it Gary Vee.

I just got my Inbox down to empty and then I take a moment to watch this. It’s a great attitude, Gary, one that in my case requires more discipline than desire. Unfortunately, what falls to the side when I impose self-discipline is reading/watching some of my favorite sites. But I hope to get to them eventually. So in NOT cutting through the noise connecting with people do you cut through the noise of surfing?
May 1st, 2008 at 9:38 am
Gary Vee,
If you had 5 things you could tell ANY businessman/up & comer/aspiring successman what would they be. What are THEE most important “laws” to live by?

I recently decided to roll the dice based on this very thought. I’m very inexperienced when it comes to self-promotion or brand development.. but when I looked at my site I decided that people already know how to promote stuff they like.
So I took down all the helpful bookmark links. I took them out of the feeds too. If people like my stuff, they will share it. What I need to concentrate on is good content and good conversation.

May 3rd, 2008 at 9:40 pm
So…
Maybe what some people really mean, or possibly the next step when there is more “noise” email / RSS, etc going on in your life is…..
How do you manage the time, to not short change other obligations responding to emails, comments, etc.
For example I had 2 days last week where I did not get much done on my to-do list due to errends, a minor ER room visit, etc.
So am I procesing client jobs / photos? I was earlier, but now I’m checking my networks instead of working…

It’s good to have a reminder sometimes. Thanks.
I am part of another community called Tribe.net
I would love to be your first friend on Tribe.
Many of us are a part of a community that builds the third largest city in NV desert once a year for an event called Burning Man. and then we tear it down. completely. “Leave No Trace.” I know that you have been to S/SW and well I haven’t…so I will not try to compare it to that, but I have never willingly subjected myself to such hideous conditions. (it’s not your everyday camping trip)
Anyway I ramble. For me it is a reminder that I must live everyday and every moment as though it counts for everything, because I believe I matter (and since I am part and all of everything then everything must matter)
Thanks for the Thunder
Sincerely Nobody Special

Hi, Gary,
Re: Book tour.
Have you checked out Rainy Day Books in Kansas City? (Fairway, Kans., to be exact: 913-384-3126; rainydaybooks.com; founder/president Vivien Jennings, vivien@rainydaybooks.com)
They have a fantastic author speaker series. I’ll stop by there, too, and recommend they bring you here!
Hope this helps.
Take care and thanks for your energy, spirit and info!

Great advice, GV. I’ve heard this said as well, “Someone’s shack is someone else’s Taj Mahal!”
May 7th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
Yes…it’s spikes in the noise, and those are what we must listen for…it’s a whole new way of listening. And responding.
Unlike the real world, the Web is not driven by resource scarcity.

Hey Gary,

Hi Gary, I came to this post b/c I am following you on Twitter. I have taken WSET courses and love your approach to teaching people about wine (ex. Late Night with Conan segment with dirt and smelly socks.) It’s original, funny and awesome.
This vid puts you in rockstar status in my books. There is no question everyone’s inbox is overflowing these days, (not to mention the tweets, pounce, IM like you said) and as a result, people have come to accept no response as not interested. Thanks for being real and for taking the time to respond. I wish more people would embrace the same attitude and consideration you give others. All the best to you.
May 7th, 2008 at 11:12 pm
Gary,
I appreciate your positive outlook and forward thinking.
Today, way to many people have their head up their ass and are too full of them selves to realize that people are important. Word of mouth is important. The small guy in Idaho may have that big idea.
Impressive.
Keep it up!

I can agree with everything you’ve said here. And I’ve been hearing you tout this notion that you read and respond to every email you get, even went on national TV and said on the Big Idea. However, I emailed you quite some time ago, with a very positive invitation while you are in Portland, and have gotten no response. Note: I’m aware of how backed up you get, and I don’t really expect or assume a response from busy people such as yourselves, especially when query emails regard things that are less important in the grand scheme (and I’m not downplaying or self hating, I just understand priorities). But, I feel that if you’re going to tout on such a grand scale, you gotta hold up your end of the bargain. You choose your own end results right? And you can respond to every email or not, you’re choice, it’s not going to hurt my feelings either way and probably not most other people’s either. I’m just here with a friendly nudge to keep you honest GV. In my world of friendship this is just the kind of thing we do for each other, so consider this a friendly comment, not an angry complaint.
Look forward to seeing you in Portland, OR.

This is so true Gary. You never know what one person could bring into your network. I realize more and more how true it is in business that its not only who you know, but more who they know and so on and so on. This piece was a great bit of motivation. Thanks!

P.S. Off the topic, you should bring the thunder to the San Diego Comic-Con in July 24-27 for your book!

Love the premise and absolutely make it one of my priority “reads” to watch GaryVee, both entertaining and most often, spot on.
That said, I am three tweets and one email unanswered. So in this particular case, I cannot get too enthralled. That said, Gary is very busy so I didn’t expect a response necessarily. Or perhaps I am simply in the Gary Vee twitter and email spam block list!
That is always possible too!
