Word of mouth has changed

I wonder how many times you will have to say things for people to get it. I was watching your stream today. You had to say things over and over. They called for help and ppl don’t except it until you beat it into there head. I wonder if some of those people really want “it” yet or do they just think they do!? hmmmm

  2. Jarret Says:

    Great video Gary!

While it was short you really got the point across. I am still getting used to the whole social media thing and all of that. But I can really see the power that it has and how you can really reach out to anybody in the world. It is definitely a great way to build your personal branding as you would say.

I am really going to start busting my hump and getting my name out there. Thanks for the video :)

  3. crawfordbrand Says:

Ha! Couldn’t help but LOL at the image conjured up with talk of long tail in your (word of) mouth. Talk about your reptilian response?! Fun stuff. Keep riding that wave.

  4. Ollie Parsley Says:

At the moment I think Twitter is great for word of mouth when a tweet is related to technology. As Twitter is unknown to 99.9% of the world I like that fact that it is the 0.1% of the world that is more technology focused as there isn’t much “noise”. I think if Parish Hilton gets on Twitter and all her fans sign up that it will exponentially grow but also the noise level. How will I be able to follow the public feed if it is people talking about highlights and plastic surgery? Maybe I am being a bit cynical.

Great to see another video on GV.com :)

I think it’s got a lot to do with the mindset of people and how they view Gary’s strategies. People are always looking for ways to boost their business, make more money, work less, etc. The thing is, it’s not about that at all! It’s about doing what you love and not settling for anything less. You might not strike it rich and you might put in more hours than at a 9-5 job, but you can make a living at it if you work hard. A lot of people want a step-by-step get-rich-and-be-happy plan, but it’s different for everybody. You can do everything Gary says, like twitter’ing and uStream’ing to people, but unless your heart is in it, it just won’t work.

  6. josephholguin Says:

Good talk Gary, all this is going to be really big soon. Its funny how some people don’t realize it yet, but once “normal people” figure it out its going to be crazy. Good thing allot of us see it, so that we can position ourselves in line for success. Thanks for the inspiration and keep doing what your doing!

Oh i wanted to let you know that for some reason your page can’t be submitted to Digg.com. Some issue with the URL.

    Joseph Holguin

  7. Chris Dunn Says:

Gary, I agree man… wait till the big boys figure this web 2.0 stuff out. I know a guy who’s close with some of the top speakers in U.S. He’s holding their hand and taking a few of them online through a new concept on the internet.

  8. anotherrandom Says:

Another thing to think about is trust. I trust that my real life friends are repping something because they actually like it. Once there is a large audience listening, I have to question why this person is telling me about this. Does he have some vested interest? Is this just a new form of advertising to learn to tune out? Money corrupts.

  9. New Word of Mouth? « Social Media + the CIA Says:

[...] New Word of Mouth? Gary Vaynerchuk talks about the power of the NEW Word of Mouth. [...]

  10. Andrew Galasetti Says:

Very true, there definitely is a new word of mouth. Someone needs to come up with a new term as well. Like “word of text” or I don’t know. But I’ve been experiencing some much of this new word of mouth for my site. It’s really exciting, especially when you can go to various places like twitter and do a search for your brand’s name and you can actually read what people are saying about you. That is something new and extremely beneficial.

    -Andrew

  11. Luke Morris Says:

    Good words, Gary.

Don’t forget that you are the originator of word of mouth to start off. Don’t feel ashamed to promote yourself. You’ve got to use your own mouth to get the word out about your stuff before others spread it by word of mouth for you. Don’t like to self-promote? You’re going to have a hard time starting your brand if you’re the only one you’ll tell about it.

  12. Jimmy T Says:

Back at it. This is still true. What has change since your Word of Mouth 2.0 post? Or has nothing changed and the user still isn’t getting it so you can help but tell us again?

P.S. I would like to hear you response to my comment on your keynote.

  13. Patrick Minze Says:

I work for a large Advertising agency and I keep trying explain this is the new media and it has to be used, but as you keep saying they have not bit yet.

  14. Nick Pettit Says:

I’m working on building a brand, and so far, nothing has been more powerful than word of mouth.

  15. David Gonzalez Says:

    Word.

  16. Nate Moller Says:

AMEN! Thanks to you and Blog World Expo 2008, I discovered Ping.fm which has saved me a ton of time in creating name recognition and word of mouth! Social media and networking has never been better!

  17. Steven-Sanders Says:

Damn! I wanna comment, but… I’m speechless. The day I see you do a video that isn’t mind blowingly bad ass, is the day hell will freeze over.

  18. Colin Nicol Says:

Spot on Gary, its amazing how quickly the word can get out now. I love watching your keynotes, it inspires me to think about how I can expand my family business in ways that my parents never even thought possible.

The tools that we now have access to are priceless. Keep up the good work my man.

  19. Doyle CLark Says:

Man, I love it. The only way to get yourself out there or build your business used to be through word of mouth. Then everything changed with ads through billboards, magazines, radio, then TV… and now the biggest revolution ever, the internet, is going to push it all back to where it began. Word of mouth.

    -D

  20. zach even - esh Says:

yep, word of mouth, I once read something that a biz should be 90% word of mouth in 6 months or you’re not doing a good enough ob.

Sounds extreme, posisbly off, but definitely motivating to get to that point!

    –zach–

  21. josh lauritch Says:

dude. i LOVE your perspective on building brands. i’m in the music industry (at a major label) and i NEVER heard this kind of stuff until i found you. thank you for lovin’ folks and serving others before yourself!

  22. josh Says:

    Gary,

I gotta admit that you’re my role model concerning internet entrepreneurship. But you’re absolutely right, word of mouth has changed completely and furthermore as a result of twitter, pounce, delicious, etc I don’t even have to leave my place of residence to spread the word. It doesn’t matter what your schedule or shift is friend people up, answer those emails, provide value added and you’re gold. You can commit to the hustle 24/7. Keep spreading the word.

I will say though I don’t want Paris Hilton on Twitter but you can’t stop a train.

  23. Bryan R. Adams Says:

Twitter is scary. Like you said, Word of Mouth on steroids. The guy from CNN, Rick Sanchez, correct me if I’m wrong has only been on Twitter for a month, maybe six weeks and has like 20K following him. When the BFF’s get on it, it will be a madhouse. In a good way (for about a year and a half). Then we will all be on to something else.

  24. Milos Says:

It makes sense to trust someone you know and someone who has already used/tested a particular product/service. Word of mouth has an amazing power which will be further enhanced by web tools/technologies as you mentioned in your video.

You killed it Gary…once again! Keep telling it like it is.

  25. CJ Guest Says:

    Great stuff GV!

Social web has totally changed the game! Thanks to your help, amongst others, I’ve been able to begin implementing the tools (like http://twitter.com/cjguest ) necessary to build brand equity and mindshare. Now it’s time to go out there and interact with as many people as possible!

Thanks for letting us in on that stream today… great to see you in action!

  26. Lawain Says:

    Gary,

Thanks for a great video. I love Twitter and the other forms of word-of-mouth tools…it is great to connect instantly and easily through a couple of key strokes. How cool is that? Keep bringing the Social Media THUNDER!!!!

  27. Jaybird Says:

I agree, WOM is much more powerful if you produce an unfavorable brand…

  28. Kenny Hyder Says:

Oprah? Who’s she? What about the Gary Vaynerchuk brand!?!

  29. Melanie Jordan Says:

Great points and video in your unique style as always!

I’m fortunate enough to not only have been raised in Corporate America as a classic marketer, but to also have spent the last decade learning online marketing and have fully embraced New Media and Social Media. Classic marketers generally just don’t “get” the new order of things which is great for infopreneurs like myself who do.

How many times have I looked for an expert or famous person or business I deal with on Twitter and found they are not there, and when I question them they say “what’s Twitter”? Or old school people will say “Oh Twitter, that’s for people with no life and no job”.

It is absolutely astounding what you can achieve and the connections you can make with limited or no budget, lightning fast, thanks to viral word of mouth.

  30. Mark Colman Says:

Ollie, if you don’t follow Paris Hilton or her tweeps, you won’t hear anything. Dig?

The Big Guys aren’t there yet! That’s good news for the Little Guys! Let’s hustle!

    Great advice as always GV!

  31. Bloggeries Says:

Great piece Gary. Someone on Twitter today actually asked if Obama’s 93K will ever be broken? Most definitely and I predict much sooner than most think…

  32. Dave Mora Says:

Word of Mouth has always been huge. I know companies that make a killing with out any money into advertisement. They let their customers do the talking. One example. Zappos! when was the last time you saw their commercial during the superbowl? I think never but yet they are making money and giving the customers bragging rights. People learn about Zappos through friends and even on twitter by following @zappos

As for my word of mouth? I love my Coco’s Salad. Don’t know Coco’s then @davemora so I can tell you more.

    http://www.davemora.com

  33. Infinity Says:

This is SO true! Why do you think advertising bots are trying to get onto Twitter? It can be used in so many ways (clearly they are NOT using it the right way - they just don’t get it).

Twitter is really the perfect example of word of mouth. It just takes one person usually to have something good spread like a virus BUT with Twitter, the speed at which it can spread is exponential if done properly.

And the best thing about social media is that you can put out content and people can find out about your brand and you will never know who they are but they could be responsible for helping to push your brand.

  34. Walt Ribeiro Says:

Solid Gary. Totally agree with everything here. My community was built from word of mouth, and Web 2.0 is really only in its early stages.

  35. Mat Packer Says:

    I can’t remember where I read this statement, or the exact wording, but basically ;

“If content is king, then word of mouth is the queen and the queen is really the person in power.. ”

That was fairly paraphrased but I think it’s heading in the right direction.

Great video by the way, loved the Bonds / steroids comment too..haha..

    Cheers
    Mat

  36. TJ Clark Says:

You are totally my Oprah, GV. Instead of book clubs you have wine lists, instead of Dr. Phil you got Chris Mott. If you need a Gail, dude, I am totally available.

Seriously, though, great point. We live in an “On Demand” society. People want their news, their information, their celebrities on demand.

Twitter, facebook, youtube– all of those– are not only a great way to kick start the new “word of mouth,” but a great way to provide new, quick, daily content for people to reach when they demand it.

If you are there for them when they demand it, they’ll kepp coming back, too.

I think you are a great example of this . .. and more. An all around inspiration, GV. Thank you.

  37. Thom Allen Says:

    Great video Gary.

Honestly I think getting “everyone” into Social Networking with services like Tiwtter or Facebook is essential for making our business grow even more. Until “everyone” gets on board with these services, we need to work hard to make sure our online connections will recommend us their off-line friends.

  38. Dawn Carter Says:

You are so right. Word of mouth has been around, it just flies around quicker and with more reach.

I love your stuff GV… keep bringing it!

  39. karli Says:

Gary, that was absolutely right on. I completely agree and am proud that you’re making sure that other people understand the importance of “word of mouth” through various means of communication. Loved the video!

  40. Richard Bliss Says:

Social media and word of mouth only works if the people using it and passing along your message are actually CUSTOMERS. It is one thing to simply be poplular, it is another to be popular with people who are willing to give you money.

I turn down requests by people for many of my social networking because i don’t know them and their noise that gets in the way of the people who are my real audience.

The question is how to build word of mouth to those who you want to talk about you.

    Good stuff, keep it up.

  41. Evan Says:

    Gary,

What other methods would you recommend for a small start-up that is solely reliant on free advertising/networking? I’m growing this list:

    StumbleUpon
    Digg
    Youtube
    pownce
    linkedin
    Friendfeed
    Twitter
    facebook
    getsatisfaction
    flickr
    myspace

What else? Is there such a thing as too many places to connect to?

I know your time is extremely valuable. Would it be possible to exchange email so I can bounce some ideas off of you? Thanks beyond measure for this website, your talks, and your example as a business owner! -Evan

  42. Patrick Says:

Love your thoughts about twitter and easily spreading the words of mouth. But I havn’t really found out how to channel and sort the great big masses of information (word of mouths) barging in on me.
This mostly results in Chaos and Distraction, with the consequence of not using it / listening any more.
Maybe one needs several Twitter accounts. Or best thing would be use the Twitter API and program a web page that will e.g. sort your Tweets. But not now, we’re in the middle of our Pinot Noir vintage over here in Germany.

  43. Mark Fitzpatrick Says:

    Great stuff my friend.

You said it: Word of mouth was always big, now it’s a BIG on the juice. And wat ta’ toss Bret Boone in the mix!

    Mark

  44. designtwit Says:

Add another layer to word of mouth… good old fashion personal selling. I’d love to read/hear how you see personal selling extend the long tail. Great post!

  45. Busse Says:

Great video, and I believe this is especially true for companies using it for customer service. I just blogged about an exchange with @7_Eleven and how I saw them handling customer concerns via twitter.

  47. Patric Schmid Says:

Hey, i digg your energy if your telling something ;) Inspired me to write a Post.

Social Media Optimization will grow and be very important in the future! And the small companies will get it first, because they can build relationships to their customers.. all the big ones will have trouble maintaining a good positive relationship. Someone said Marketing will be 1:1 in the future…

  48. Cheap Wine Finder Says:

Saw your tweet about recommitting to garyvaynerchuk.com. Looking forward to hearing more of what you have to say. I especially appreciate your perspective on how early we are in social media and what it will soon evolve into once the rest of the world jumps in.

  49. stevengrande Says:

I am not sure if anyone has read the book “The Tipping Point” but it looks like Twitter and similar micro-blog sites are going to be the connectors for which we get our information from, moving forward.

Thanks again Gary for the vid!!

  50. Daniel Kemp 4 Earth Emperor Says:

Ya dude. Oprah just talks an hour a day, does some photoshoots and makes hundreds of millios a year. Personal brand is a pretty big thing.

    Paris Hilton is hot.

  51. Frank D Says:

@Richard Bliss “The question is how to build word of mouth to those who you want to talk about you.” EXACTLY!!

Good vid, but this worries me. Most of people’s social media experiments fail (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13577_3-10058509-36.html). Here is why I think that is. There is a difference between real word of mouth and people generating word of mouth because they think it will help their bottom line. When consumers feel like they don’t know true motives (or feel duped in some way) it taints the process, and if people on twitter feel like they are more in an ad stream than in a helpful information stream then they will get turned off. I hope the companies looking to use these different tools find a responsible way to do things. Facebook’s idea of social ads based on the companies that individuals list on their favorite pages actually makes sense to me but tools like twitter that are more open are prone to misuse.

Gary is great, but he extrapolates a great deal on his own experience so you have to analyze things for what they are. Gary builds his personal brand and then uses that to CONNECT with people who like that brand. It seems like most people on here are solely focused on “marketing” through social media, which is the wrong paradigm.

  52. Jeff Slobotski Says:

    Gary-

SO good—you are SPOT on. Can’t wait to see you at the BIG OMAHA Conference next year!

    Keep killin’ it!

  53. Bloggeries Says:

Speaking of WOM. Whenever I hit refresh on twitter today someone is talking about the Out of Room sale. Craziness.

  54. chris demeyere Says:

Very true. And what is even more important is that word of mouth has become global! I’m in Belgium, Europe. Yet i’m only one button away.

  55. David Dadekian Says:

I’ll admit I haven’t gotten into Twitter like I should. It still doesn’t do it for me as an app yet. Great idea, so-so execution so far in my opinion. I’ve been doing more of the Facebook lately.

    Thanks as always, Gary.

  56. KatieP Says:

Agreeing with Patrick from an ad agency POV because I’m continually trying to push clients into the new wave of WOM, but they’re just not getting it. FOOLS! Anyhow, WOM has always been the maker or breaker when it comes to promotion, it’s just, as Gary says, on steroids now. But the QOD should be, not how do you ride this wave, but how do you create the next wave?!? Cheers.

  57. My God Says:

You are all such sheep, eating out of Gary’s hand…I feel bad for the lot of you.

  58. hellochris Says:

True that. It sounds silly but as humans we like to talk. There is nothing better than recommending a product or service to someone else and seeing that recommendation help that person. So the key is to help people be selfish. It isn’t help people to help you or your brand but to help people feel good about spreading the word about something that helps the people they share it with.

How is this done? Simply by adding those ingredients in the mix before you make the cookies. It is a core element that is overlooked. Create a product that solves a solution for yourself and in return you can solve the problem for many others that have that same need.

  59. Jarad Johnson Says:

    Here’s a question for you Gary…

When using sources like Twitter and even more so Facebook to self promote, is it a good idea to follow their rules and not just befriend everyone in hopes of them visiting your site?

There is an increasing number of people adding me on Twitter in which I’ve never met, but I’ve yet to add anyone I wasn’t very familiar with. Is this the right attitude or in your opinion should I be adding everyone who shows interest in me as well?

  60. Jason Egan Says:

Fantastic points, Gary. The problem is that there are just SO many companies/brands out there that just don’t get it. Of course that lack of “getting in” on most brand’s part creates real opportunities for upstarts and newcomers to get into the game (whatever that game may be). The flip side is that by not “getting it” you are hurting yourself and are missing the future.

  61. Sid Savara Says:

This is fucking awesome. I love that you use Oprah as your example - that’s kind of my mantra, I’m being me, and when I have a tough situation I ask myself (literally) what would Oprah do?

Oprah is it. She is the ultimate in brand equity. She says she likes a book and it’s a best seller - I bet some people that watch her show wouldn’t read a book if their own mom told them to. But Oprah says buy? Now they want that shit.

  62. Jordan GM Says:

Man! First time I’ve ever seen GV. Love the energy! LOL. Good stuff. And YES….I just made video (and launched a site) about Marketing in general, BUT it’s going to be centered around WOM. GaryV, thanks for sharing this perspective. It truly is crazy (and powerful) to think of how EXPONENTIAL our WOM has really become in this “Internet Age”. And yes, just wait until “the real people” (LOL) get in on this deal! Pandemonium!!

    Thanks GV,

    JGM

  63. Ryan Cloke Says:

Thanks for your video Guy… your energy got me all fired up again… I am working on a social site (twitter with steroids)… and you reminded me why I am doing this. So many don’t get - more don’t want to get it. This together with your ROI video punches home the message loud and clear.

Social Media is here to stay and companies / organizations / individuals who don’t get their heads around social media will get left behind. Not just that they are missing out on the huge opportunities already out there.

Good vid GV. Word of mouth, interestingly enough, also works the other way, as in if you don’t have good content (ie a bad restaurant), then everyone will quickly know about it and stop going. Gary,

As much as I think Twitter is cool…it just seems so very juvenile…like hey check out what I’m doing world. It reminds me soooo much of the cool kid thing in highschool.
